Rod Deck (Winside, Nebraska)
2017 NTPA Grand National Super Farm Champion
Worthington, Ohio---When competition began Saturday afternoon in Sandwich, Rod Deck faced a six-point deficit to Brad Hart's "Don't Ask" in his bid to repeat as Super Farm champion. Hart had settled in as the division's leader since his pair of thirds in Brandenburg, an event Deck swept to begin his midseason turnaround aboard "Dream On." He won for the third time on the season in the day's first session in DeKalb County to trim Hart's lead to four. Then, in the evening session, Deck pulled to 312' after Hart had been stopped at 304' eight hooks before, and the wait was on to see how many point-earning tractors would fall in between. Turns out, it would be precisely three, and so that win of a mere six hours before became the tiebreaker in Rod's favor. The Ferris family's "Absolutely Nuts" (-9), which led partway through the season, finished third, while two-time BG ring winner Dave Whelan's "My Last Excuse" (-22) got fourth. And fifth place---the final Enderle transfer position---was swapped among three tractors throughout the day; when the merry-go-round ended, Tony Sietsema's "Wolverine Deere" (-43) had claimed it by two points.
